In a significant move to enhance urban logistics, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has partnered with Blue Dart to introduce a sustainable cargo transportation system, reported The Shipping News Today.

This initiative marks a major step toward reducing traffic congestion and curbing emissions by utilising metro trains for freight movement.

Under the agreement, cargo shipments will be transported via metro trains during non-peak hours, ensuring faster deliveries while making efficient use of existing infrastructure.

The initiative is designed to ease road congestion by shifting parcel movement from roads to metro networks, enhance supply chain efficiency with a more reliable and eco-friendly transportation model, and cut down vehicular emissions, contributing to a greener urban environment.

Globally, metro networks have been exploring ways to optimise their infrastructure for freight transportation.

Madrid Metro, for instance, has launched a similar model to transport parcels and reduce pollution. DMRC is in talks with Madrid Metro to learn from their experiences and refine its logistics strategy.

This collaboration aims to reshape urban freight movement across Delhi-NCR, with DMRC planning to expand metro-enabled logistics services to more stations and integrate first-mile and last-mile connectivity through dedicated Micro Parcel Hubs.
