Diplomatic Clash: India Says German Foreign Ministry's Remarks on Kejriwal Arrest 'Blatant Interference' In Its Internal Matters

India has lodged a protest against remarks made by the German foreign ministry regarding the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi liquor policy case.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has labeled the German foreign ministry's comments as a "blatant interference in India's internal matters", NDTV reported citing MEA sources.

The Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, George Enzweiler, was summoned by the MEA to register the protest.

Enzweiler was seen leaving the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) office located in the national capital's South Block earlier today (23 March).

The response from India came hours after the German Foreign Ministry said they expected Kejriwal to get a fair and impartial trial as India is a democratic nation.

"We have taken note, India is a democratic country. We assume and expect that the standards relating to independence of Judiciary and basic democratic principles will also be applied in this case," the spokesperson of the German Foreign Ministry said earlier.

"Like anyone facing accusations, Mr Kejriwal is entitled to a fair and impartial trial, this includes he can make use of all available legal avenues without restrictions. The presumption of innocence is a central element of the rule of law and must apply to him," the German foreign ministry spokesperson added.

Kejriwal was arrested on Thursday (21 March) night by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.

The central probe agency has accused the Delhi CM of being a "key conspirator" in the alleged scam.

A Delhi court on Friday (22 March) remanded Kejriwal in ED custody till 28 March "for his detailed and sustained interrogation" regarding his role in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.
