The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday (3 November) approached the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, escalating tensions over what it termed an “unconstitutional and arbitrary” exercise, as per an Indian Express report.

The move comes a day after the ruling party led an all-party meeting in Chennai to oppose the revision drive.

Filed by senior DMK leader R S Bharathi and MP-advocate N R Elango, the Writ petition contests the constitutional validity of the EC’s 27 October notification initiating SIR across multiple states.

The party argued that the exercise violates Articles 14, 19, 21, 325 and 326 of the Constitution, along with provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.

According to the petition, the SIR risks “arbitrarily and without due process disenfranchising lakhs of voters… thereby disrupting free and fair elections and democracy in the country.”

The DMK contended that the EC’s compressed schedule and lack of procedural safeguards could lead to “removal of names of lakhs of genuine voters”.

It further noted that a Special Summary Revision (SSR) had already been completed earlier this year and was “continuously updated”, questioning the need for another round of intensive verification.

Sunday’s all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister M K Stalin saw participation from 44 parties, which jointly resolved to move the Supreme Court, accusing the EC of acting “undemocratically”.

The DMK also cited alleged irregularities in Bihar’s pilot SIR programme, warning that the Tamil Nadu exercise could result in “targeted voter deletions”.

Calling it a matter of “grave public significance”, the party urged judicial intervention to protect citizens’ fundamental rights and the integrity of India’s democratic framework.
