Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday (21 June) announced that the government is in the process of preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) to extend Namma Metro and intercity rail connectivity to Tumakuru, reported Times of India.

The plan also includes developing a satellite town to ease pressure on Bengaluru and improve infrastructure in surrounding districts.

The announcement was made during the 75th birthday celebrations of state cooperation minister K N Rajanna in Tumakuru.

Shivakumar highlighted the government’s commitment to the district’s progress, describing Tumakuru as “Kalpataru Nadu” with “its own historical significance and a rich religious and educational legacy.”

"To strengthen Tumakuru further, DPRs are being prepared for intercity train and Metro rail connectivity, along with a satellite town," he said,

This comes after states home minister G Parameshwara, who is incharge of the district, advocated for Tumakuru’s inclusion under the proposed Greater Bengaluru Authority.

The renewed infrastructure push in Tumakuru follows the Karnataka government's proposal a few months ago to suggest the district as the site for Bengaluru’s second airport.

In a further assurance of the his commitment to regional development, Shivakumar reiterated the government’s resolve to complete the Yettinahole project and deliver drinking water to Kolar by 2027.

“Drinking water supply will be the first priority, followed by lake rejuvenation. CM has instructed me to complete Yettinahole project on top priority, even if other works are delayed,” he said.
