Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP PP Chaudhary, chair of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bills, stated that the earliest possible implementation of simultaneous elections would be in 2034, as per the draft legislation. He added that the committee may propose constitutional mechanisms, such as a constructive vote of no-confidence akin to Germany’s system, to maintain electoral alignment across the country.

According to a report by Indian Express , the committee, which began its work after the Bills were introduced in December 2024, has visited only two states so far—Uttarakhand and Maharashtra, and plans nationwide consultations over the next two to two-and-a-half years. Chaudhary emphasised that additional provisions may be recommended to ensure the synchronisation of polls in the long run.

The Constitution Amendment Bill proposes aligning Lok Sabha and Assembly elections by curtailing state terms as needed. Chaudhary argued this change strengthens democracy by increasing voter turnout and reducing governance disruptions caused by frequent elections. He dismissed criticisms that the move undermines federalism or democracy, citing past practices and legal precedent.

Chaudhary also responded to concerns about hung verdicts and mid-term government falls, suggesting constitutional amendments for political stability. He maintained that simultaneous polls would reduce economic costs, enhance policy continuity, and discourage populist electoral practices.

While acknowledging that the NDA lacks a two-thirds majority to pass the amendment, Chaudhary expressed confidence that parties prioritising national interest would support the initiative.
