The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday (2 September) took Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Delhi member of the legislative assembly (MLA) Amanatullah Khan into custody after searching his house.

The central investigative agency reached Khan's Delhi residence early in the morning and started searching his house. Khan alleged that the ED was there to arrest him.

Showing a video of his ailing old mother, Khan accused the ED of harassing his family. AAP Rajya Sabha member of parliament (MP) Sanjay Singh also released a video calling the case against Khan baseless.

Khan is being investigated under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and is accused of irregularities in the hiring process for the Delhi Waqf Board staff.

The ED claims that Khan illegally generated a substantial amount of money from the illicit recruitment of staff in the Delhi Waqf Board and used this to purchase immovable assets in his associates' names.

The central agency has raided premises linked to the AAP MLA multiple times and has even seized several incriminating physical and digital evidence during the raids.

However, the AAP leadership including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has always defended Khan and accused the authorities of trying to dismantle the AAP by filing false cases against its leaders.
