Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed support in favour of removing Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, as reported by the New Indian Express.
However, he cautioned that any such action must be carried out within the framework of the law. He pointed out that the tomb was placed under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) during the Congress regime, which complicates any immediate removal efforts.
Speaking at an event on Saturday (8 march) night, Fadnavis addressed the growing demand for the site’s removal, particularly after BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale—a direct descendant of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj—called for the tomb’s demolition.
"We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law because it is a protected site. The site was put under ASI's protection during the Congress regime some years back," said Fadnavis.
The debate over Aurangzeb’s history in Maharashtra has reignited tensions, particularly after Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi made remarks praising the Mughal emperor.
His comments sparked outrage among BJP leaders, ultimately leading to his suspension from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly until the end of the budget session on 26 March.
Azmi’s remarks have further fueled calls for removing Aurangzeb’s historical presence in Maharashtra, with many BJP leaders and right-wing organisations questioning the relevance of preserving the tomb.
