The first file that Narendra Modi signed after being sworn in as the Prime Minister for the third consecutive time was to authorise the release of the 17th installment of PM Kisan Nidhi.

The Monday (10 June) approval is set to benefit 9.3 crore farmers by distributing around Rs 20,000 crore. This shows the government's commitment to the farmer welfare

"It is fitting that the first file signed on taking charge is related to farmer welfare. We want to keep working even more for the farmers and the agriculture sector in the times to come," Modi said.

Under the  Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, eligible farmer families are provided Rs 6,000 per year in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 each.

The scheme was launched in 2019 by PM Modi ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. All landholding farmer families in the country are eligible under PM-KISAN, subject to certain exclusion criteria.

The last installment of it was released on 28 February 2024, before the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by the Election Commission.

Till now, the sum amount of released installments has already crossed Rs 3 lakh crore.
