Following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, the party and its allies in the INDI Alliance have announced plans to hold a 'maha rally' at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital on 31 March, as declared by Gopal Rai at a press conference on Sunday (24 March).
Rai called for the participation of all spiritual, business, and political groups in the rally to protest against what he termed as oppression by the ruling BJP and to defend the country's democracy, as per a report by The Economic Times.
"Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi CM, has been arrested, marking the end of democracy in the country and the rise of dictatorship. There is widespread anger among those who cherish the Constitution and democracy. PM Modi is using agencies to target opposition leaders with false cases," Rai stated.
"To combat this dictatorship and to strengthen our fight, we have decided to hold a 'maha rally' of the INDI Alliance at Ramlila Maidan on 31 March, Sunday, at 10 am. I urge not just the people of Delhi but all Indians who believe in the Constitution and democracy to join us at Ramlila Maidan," he added.
Delhi Congress President Arvinder Singh Lovely, also present at the press briefing, emphasised that the 31 March rally would not be political, but a call to defend democracy and raise voices against the Centre.
Additionally, Lovely criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that the Opposition has not been given a level playing field after the freezing of Congress' accounts.
In response to the arrest, AAP announced a candlelight march and effigy burning across Delhi on Sunday, protesting against the BJP's alleged dictatorship and Kejriwal's arrest.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement on 21 March in connection with the now-canceled excise policy case.
On Saturday, Chief Minister Kejriwal filed a case in the Delhi High Court challenging his arrest and the remand order issued by the trial court on 22 March.
