In a major anti-maoist operation in Chhattisgarh's Abujhmad, security forces neutralised at least four Naxals during a gunfight on Saturday (4 January) evening.
The hours-long operation, however, resulted in the martyrdom of one police officer.
Automatic weapons like AK-47 and self-loading rifles (SLR) were recovered during the joint operation.
The anti-Naxal operation was carried out by police teams and District Reserve Guards (DRGs) from Narayanpur, Dantewada, Jagdalpur, and Kondagaon districts, working in coordination with the Special Task Force (STF).
The DRG head constable killed in the gunfight was identified as Sannu Karam, India Today reported citing a police official.
The gunfight erupted in the heavily forested region of Abujhmaad, a known Naxal stronghold bordering Narayanpur and Dantewada districts, as the security forces were carrying out an anti-Naxalite operation.
This comes days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah was in Chhattisgarh to address a group of surrendered Maoists where he had promised that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government would do everything possible to rehabilitate them.
He appealed to them to help encourage other Maoists to surrender as well.
