A woman Maoist in uniform was shot dead during an encounter with security forces in the south-western forested border region of Bijapur, near Telangana, Bastar police reported on Tuesday (6 May).

This is the fourth woman Maoist killed during the ongoing anti-Naxal operation, which has seen over 10,000 personnel deployed across the region for the past 12 days.

Security forces, including the DRG, STF, CRPF, and elite CoBRA units, launched the inter-state operation based on intelligence about Maoist presence in the Karregutta forest hills, considered a stronghold for top Maoist leaders.

The body of the slain woman and a rifle were recovered from the encounter site, with officials suggesting more casualties on the Maoist side.

“Based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists along the south-west border areas of Bijapur district, a joint team of security forces comprising personnel from District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), CRPF and its elite Cobra force is out on an anti-Maoist campaign. During the operation underway, an encounter took place between the forces and the Maoists. The body of a woman Maoist and a rifle were recovered from the scene,” said Bastar range inspector general of police Sundarraj Pattilingam, quoted by IE.

Separately, in Sukma district, Maoists killed deputy sarpanch Muchaki Ram of Tarlaguda village. His body was found on Tuesday after locals alerted authorities.

So far in 2025, 146 Maoists have been killed in encounters across Chhattisgarh, including 129 in the Bastar region, where the Maoists have also killed nine civilians.
