The Kerala High Court has prohibited single-use plastics at 10 well-known hill tourist locations throughout the state, including Munnar in Idukki and Sultan Bathery in Wayanad.
This directive, which takes effect from 2 October, aims to curb plastic pollution in high-footfall areas, reported News18.
The ban specifically targets plastic water bottles below 5 liters, plastic straws, plates, cups, and cutlery.
However, it does not apply to 5-litre plastic water bottles and 2-litre plastic soft drink bottles.
Thekkady, Vagamon, Athirappilly, Chalakudy, Nelliyampathy, Pookode Lake-Vythiri, Karlad Lake in Wayanad, Ambalavayal, and the Wayanad Heritage Museum are among the tourist destinations where the ban will take place.
Beyond tourist areas, the High Court has also prohibited these single-use plastic items in all wedding auditoriums, hotels, and restaurants throughout Kerala, as well as at all official central and state government functions.
The court, initiating this as a suo-motu petition, has directed the state government to implement adequate measures by 2 October.
Furthermore, it mandates the establishment of sufficient water kiosks in hilly tourist areas to provide clean and safe drinking water at reasonable distances.
Justices Bechu Kurien Thomas and Gopinath P issued the order, directing the chief secretary of Kerala and the special secretary to the local self-government department to coordinate the implementation of these directives, along with the local self government institutions, the pollution control board, and the state police.
