The Gujarat Maritime Board has signed a Rs 17,000 crore Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gujarat Pipavav Port Limited (APM Terminals).
The agreement was formalised in Gandhinagar in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and AP Moller-Maersk Board Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla.
The MoU focuses on expanding and modernising Pipavav Port, aiming to reinforce Gujarat’s leadership as the “Maritime Gateway of India”.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel noted that the port’s expansion will strengthen Gujarat’s logistics ecosystem, benefiting industries, exporters, and traders by reducing turnaround time and operational costs.
He added that the development would catalyse growth in surrounding regions through new industrial hubs, warehousing facilities, and supply chain linkages.
The project is expected to generate around 25,000 direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local economy and improving livelihoods in coastal and rural areas.
Under this investment, Pipavav Port will enhance its capacity to handle containers, bulk, liquid, and Ro-Ro cargo, supported by new liquid cargo berths, mechanised bulk facilities, upgraded container terminals, digitalised operations, and eco-friendly infrastructure.
Jon Goldner, Chief Executive of APM Terminals Asia and Middle East, described the investment as a commitment not just to Pipavav’s growth but also to unlocking new opportunities for Gujarat, India, and global trade.
He said the goal is to make Pipavav a model of world-class efficiency and green growth, reinforcing India’s maritime leadership.
The expansion aligns with Gujarat’s target to raise the capacity of its non-major ports to 3,000 MMTPA by 2047 under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision.
