The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) held its general council meeting at Kalaignar Thidal in Chennai on Sunday (2 June) under the leadership of Chief Minister M K Stalin.

During the meeting, it adopted 27 resolutions, many of which were sharply critical of the Narendra Modi-led central government .

Among the key resolutions was one against the alleged imposition of Hindi under the National Education Policy, with the DMK asserting that the linguistic sentiments of Tamils should not be tampered with. Another resolution criticised the Centre’s amendments to the Waqf Act, claiming they amounted to the usurpation of Muslim community properties.

The party also demanded an early and thorough caste census, condemned the “discriminatory” approach to fund allocation towards Tamil Nadu, and called for a halt to any delimitation exercise based on population, warning it could reduce Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament.

As per a report by India Today, the meeting also saw the party strongly endorse Chief Minister Stalin’s leadership, and hailed his son Udhayanidhi as the “hope of Tamil Nadu’s future.”

The DMK further praised the recent Supreme Court judgment delineating the role of Governors, crediting Chief Minister Stalin’s efforts in safeguarding state autonomy. Party members were instructed to reach out to two crore households, with a target of enrolling one crore families as members using a mobile app.

Chief Minister Stalin later led a 22-kilometre roadshow in Chennai, and paid a visit to his elder brother M K Alagiri, a move seen as an attempt at reconciliation within the extended Karunanidhi family ahead of the crucial state polls due next year.
