Indian Railways Achieves New Milestone With 4.5 Km Long 'Rudrastra' Freight Train— 354 Wagons, Seven Engines

In a landmark achievement for Indian Railways, the "Rudrastra," a 4.5 km long freight train, has been successfully operated, marking it as the longest freight train in the country.

The train, comprising 354 wagons, 6 rakes, and 7 engines, completed an experimental run from Ganjkhwaja to Dhanbad, showcasing a significant leap in the nation's rail logistics capabilities.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this milestone on X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting the train's impressive length and the technological prowess behind its operation.

"'Rudrastra' - Bharat's longest freight train (4.5 km long)," Vaishnav said.

He also shared a video of the train which covered a distance of 200 km during the trial run.

The "Rudrastra" is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency and capacity of India's rail network, which is vital for supporting the country's growing economic demands.

In a post on X, East Central Railway, which operated the train, said, "A new milestone! The East Central Railway achieved a significant feat by operating the 4.5-kilometer-long "Rudrastra," consisting of 354 wagons, from Ganjkhwaja station to Garhwa Road station in the DDU division, covering a distance of 200 kilometers. Seven engines were used to run this freight train".
