Renowned archaeologist KK Muhammed has asserted that the contentious Bhojshala/Kamal Maula Mosque complex in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district was originally a Saraswati temple that was later converted into an Islamic place of worship.
He emphasised the importance of Hindus and Muslims respecting the court's decision and honoring the Places of Worship Act, 1991, while also urging them to come together to resolve differences over such sites.
Muhammed also called for Muslim respect towards Hindu sentiments regarding Mathura and Kashi as per a report by The Economic Times.
He stated that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is conducting a survey of the disputed Bhojshala complex following directives from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
According to Muhammed, the historical fact is that the Bhojshala complex was a Saraswati temple before being converted into a mosque.
However, he stressed that under the Places of Worship Act 1991, the status of a site is determined by its status in 1947. Therefore, if it was a temple in 1947, it remains a temple, and if it was a mosque, it remains a mosque.
Muhammed, a former ASI official who was part of the first excavation team at Ayodhya in 1976-77, emphasised the need for both sides to adhere to the law and respect the court's decision, as it would be the only viable solution. He advised against any actions that could lead to further problems.
He also highlighted the significance of Mathura and Kashi for Hindus, likening their importance to that of Mecca and Madinah for Muslims.
He stated, "Muslims should understand the sentiments of Hindus. Kashi is associated with Lord Shiva and Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The Hindus can't shift them to other places but these are only mosques for Muslims which are neither directly associated with Prophet Mohammed nor 'aulias.' They (mosques) can be shifted elsewhere."
