A resolution has been introduced in the House of Representatives by a group of US lawmakers, led by Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar.

The resolution aims to declare India's Independence Day as the National Day of Celebration of the World's Two Largest Democracies.

The resolution emphasises the belief that the United States and India share strong democratic values and a partnership that will continue to promote global democracy.

It is hoped that this partnership will also contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity for all nations.

Congressman Shri Thanedar, along with co-sponsors Congressman Buddy Carter and Brad Sharman, has introduced the resolution to designate 15 August, India's Independence Day, as the 'National Day of Celebration'.

According to the resolution, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official state visit to the United States on 22 June generated a new level of trust and understanding between the two countries on the basis of common interests and shared commitments to freedom, democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

The resolution further expounded that Americans of Indian heritage play a vital role in public life in the United States. They serve as government officials, military personnel, and law enforcement officers, upholding the principles of the US Constitution and contributing to the diversity of the nation. Their presence enriches the fabric of American society.

In the same vein, it continued that, it is important to celebrate and reaffirm the democratic principles that both India and the United States were founded upon. This strengthens the bond between the two nations and fosters a sense of unity and cooperation.
