India has achieved a new milestone in Paralympic history, recording its best-ever medal haul, propelled by the brilliant efforts of its track and field stars.
The country’s tally reached 20, surpassing the 19 medals won in Tokyo three years ago.
India's medal count now stands at three gold, seven silver, and 10 bronze. The track and field athletes continued their strong form, adding five more medals—two silver and three bronze—on day six of the competition.
The latest medals place the country 17th in the paralympic standings.
Indian javelin throwers Ajeet Singh and world record holder Sundar Singh Gurjar shone again, earning silver and bronze with throws of 65.62m and 64.96m, respectively, in the F46 category.
The F46 category includes athletes with moderate impairments in arm movement or limb loss.
Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu, both high jumpers, secured silver and bronze with jumps of 1.88m and 1.85m, respectively, in the T63 finals.
T63 is for high jumpers with available movement moderately affected in one leg or the absence of limbs above the knee.
Earlier, world champion sprinter Deepthi Jeevanji ensured another bronze for India in the women's 400m (T20) event with the 20-year-old clocking 55.82sec to secure a podium finish in her debut Games appearance. She finished behind Yuliia Shuliar (55.16sec) of Ukraine and world record holder Aysel Onder (55.23sec) of Turkey.
