India on Wednesday (1 October) clarified its stance on sending peacekeepers to Ukraine or Gaza, stating it will deploy troops only for United Nations (UN)–mandated missions, reported The New Indian Express.
Vishwesh Negi, a Ministry of External Affairs official on deputation to the Ministry of Defence, said the chances of sending Indian forces to either conflict zone are “highly unlikely.”
Negi explained, “Given the composition of the UNSC, such a deployment is highly unlikely.”
He stressed that India participates only in missions cleared under the relevant chapters of the UN Charter.
Lieutenant General Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of the Indian Army (Information System and Training), reinforced the position, telling reporters, “We only do it under the UN flag; we understand the legitimacy.”
Their remarks came ahead of India hosting the United Nations Troop Contributing Countries’ (UNTCC) Chiefs Conclave from 14 to 16 October in New Delhi.
The event will gather Army Chiefs and senior military leaders from nearly 30 nations, including Algeria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, France, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. Pakistan and China will not attend.
Lt Gen Kapoor described the conclave as “a unique forum where the collective experience, wisdom, and commitment of militaries and nations will converge to deliberate the shared responsibility of the international community towards maintenance of peace under the UN Charter.”
India has contributed more than 2,90,000 troops to 50 UN peacekeeping missions in 75 years.
Currently, over 5,000 Indian personnel serve in nine active missions, including Female Engagement Teams.
A total of 182 Indian peacekeepers have died in action.
India was the first to send an all-women police contingent to Liberia in 2007.
