In a significant move to elevate India's profile on the global sporting stage, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the submission of a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (27 August).
The proposal was put forward by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The decision also includes greenlighting the signing of a Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and providing necessary guarantees, along with a grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government, should the bid be successful.
"Ahmedabad is an ideal host city offering world class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture. Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest stadium in the world, has already demonstrated its capability by successfully hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final," an official statement said.
The Games are expected to draw athletes from 72 countries, along with coaches, technical officials, tourists, and media personnel.
This influx is anticipated to benefit local businesses, generate substantial revenue, and stimulate economic growth across various sectors.
Beyond the athletic competitions, the event promises broader impacts.
Hosting the CWG would boost tourism, create numerous job opportunities, and open doors for professionals in fields such as sports science, event operations and management, logistics, transportation, broadcasting, media, IT, communications, and public relations.
"Hosting such a globally prestigious event will foster a strong sense of national pride and unity. It will provide a shared national experience and boost the morale of our Nation. It will inspire a new generation of athletes to enter into Sports as a career option and encourage greater participation in sports at all levels," the government said in a statement.
