Indian Railways: Ex-Gratia Payments To Train Accident Victims Hiked By Upto Ten Times

Indian Railways has revised ex-gratia relief payments upto ten times for train accident victims, including those sustaining severe and minor injuries.

In cases of fatalities, the relief aid has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh. For grievous injuries, the the ex-gratia payment has been raised from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh.

For individuals with minor injuries, the amount has been elevated to Rs 50,000 from the previous Rs 5,000.

The Railways effected the increase to payments made after 2012. The last time it was revised in 2012, so there was a need for further revision, explained the Railways.

"It has now been decided to revise the amount of ex-gratia relief to be paid to the dependents of deceased and injured passengers involved in train accidents and untoward incidents...," according to the circular issued by the Railways said.

The updated relief measures will also be applicable to road users involved in accidents at manned-level crossing gates, where the Railways holds liability.

In instances where a train passenger requires hospitalisation for more than 30 days due to accidents, an additional payment of Rs 3,000 per day will be disbursed every 10 days or upon discharge, whichever comes earlier.

This support will continue for an additional six months of hospitalisation, followed by Rs 750 per day for an additional five months.

However, no relief payment will be extended to those involved in accidents at unmanned level crossings, trespassers or individuals affected by overhead equipment electrocution.
