Indian Railways has reached a historic milestone in wagon production, with a total of 41,929 units produced in FY 2024-25, marking an 11 per cent year-on-year growth from the previous fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Railways.
This achievement exceeds the 37,650 units produced in FY 2023-24 and represents a threefold increase compared to the average production of 13,262 wagons annually between 2004 and 2014.
The total wagon production over the last three years stands at 1,02,369 units.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the annual wagon production over the years is as follows:
From 2004 to 2014, the average production was 13,262 wagons per year.
From 2014 to 2024, the average production increased to 15,875 wagons per year.
In the fiscal year 2022-2023, 22,790 wagons were produced.
In FY 2023-2024, the production rose significantly to 37,650 wagons.
In FY 2024-2025, a record 41,929 wagons were produced.
"This growth is expected to reduce freight bottlenecks and enhance Rail cargo movement," the ministry said.
The surge in production is expected to facilitate smoother and faster cargo movement, especially for bulk transportation sectors like coal, cement, and steel, which will lead to increased efficiency.
Beyond the immediate logistical improvements, the increased availability of wagons will reduce reliance on road freight, which will, in turn, lower fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with sustainability objectives.
"Additionally, the improved efficiency in freight movement will help curb transportation costs, ultimately benefiting businesses and consumers by mitigating inflationary pressures," the ministry said.
