In a tribute to the valour and sacrifice of Captain Anuj Nayyar, a Maha Vir Chakra awardee, Indian Railways has dedicated a WAG-9 HC locomotive in his memory.

The ceremony took place at the Electric Loco Shed in Tamil Nadu's Arakkonam, marking a significant moment of reverence for the fallen hero of the 1999 Kargil War.

Captain Anuj Nayyar, who displayed exceptional courage and made the ultimate sacrifice during the conflict, was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest military decoration for exemplary valour in combat during operations in the Kargil war.

"Bravery immortalised! Commemorating the unparalleled valour and sacrifice of Maha Vir Chakra awardee Captain Anuj Nayyar in the 1999 Kargil War, Indian Railways proudly dedicates the WAG-9 HC locomotive to his memory at the Electric Loco Shed, Arakkonam," the Indian Railways said in a post on X.

Born on 28 August 1975 in Delhi, Nayyar pursued his education at DPS Mathura Road before joining the National Defence Academy (NDA) and later the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.

He was commissioned into the 17 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army.

During Operation Vijay, Captain Anuj Nayyar played a crucial role in recapturing Point 4875 (Pimple Complex) in the Mushkoh Valley. His unit was assigned to clear enemy bunkers on steep, rugged terrain under heavy enemy fire.

On 6 July 1999, as the team moved forward, Pakistani soldiers fired heavily from well-entrenched positions.

Despite intense shelling, Captain Nayyar led his men in destroying four enemy bunkers and eliminating several enemy soldiers.

He kept advancing, ensuring the mission’s success, but was hit by an enemy RPG shell and made the supreme sacrifice.

Before he laid down his life, he killed nine enemy soldiers and destroyed three medium machine gun positions of the enemy.
