Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic champion from India, narrowly missed the chance to make history as the first Indian athlete to claim two Olympic golds in individual sports.

Competing in the men's javelin final at the Paris Olympics, Chopra secured the silver medal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded Chopra for his performance.

"Neeraj Chopra is excellence personified! Time and again he’s shown his brilliance. India is elated that he comes back with yet another Olympic success. Congratulations to him on winning the Silver. He will continue to motivate countless upcoming athletes to pursue their dreams and make our nation proud," PM Modi wrote on X.

However, the athletics world was left stunned as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem clinched the gold with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters, India Today reported.

Chopra’s silver medal came from an impressive throw of 89.45 meters on his second attempt, marking his personal best at the Olympic Games.

This throw surpassed his previous best of 89.34 meters, which had secured him the leading position during the qualification round earlier in the week.

Despite managing just one valid attempt, Chopra’s effort was sufficient to secure the silver, marking yet another historic achievement for India at the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Nadeem’s impressive performance included two throws over 90 meters, solidifying his place among the greats in Olympic track and field history.

Anderson Peters of Grenada rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.

The javelin final saw Chopra and Nadeem making history as India and Pakistan finished second and first, respectively on the Olympic podium, a rare occurrence in a sport typically dominated by European athletes.

This result reversed the standings from last year’s World Championships, where Chopra had taken gold and Nadeem the silver.

Chopra made history at the Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Indian to win gold in a track and field event with a throw of 87.58 meters.

His latest silver in Paris places him among the elite group of Indian athletes, joining the ranks of Norman Pritchard, Sushil Kumar, PV Sindhu, and Manu Bhaker, who have each won more than one individual Olympic medal.
