The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the country's voter list is nearing the milestone of one billion voters.

Recent data from the ECI reveals that over 990 million people are registered as voters across 33 states and union territories, representing a 2.2 per cent increase compared to last year.

The overall tally is projected to rise further as voter data from Nagaland, Sikkim, and Chandigarh is yet to be included.

Male voters make up over 507 million of the total, while the count for female voters stands at over 483 million.

Additionally, the number of voters identifying as third gender has surpassed 48,000.

The commission highlighted that female voter registrations have crossed 480 million for the first time, marking a significant milestone.

Speaking on Tuesday, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated, “The country's electorate has already crossed the 99 crore-mark and is nearing the record figure of 1 billion.”

He added that the rise in women voters is a first in the history of electoral democracy.

The expanding voter base has also improved the ratio of voters to the overall population.

This year, the voter-to-population ratio has climbed to 67.8 per 100 people, compared to 66.8 the last year.

The gender ratio, measuring the number of female voters per 1,000 male voters, has also improved to 954, up from 948 in 2024.

With more than 153 million voters, Uttar Pradesh leads as the state with the highest number of registered voters.

Maharashtra follows with over 98 million, then Bihar with over 78 million, West Bengal with over 76 million, and Tamil Nadu with over 63 million.

Lakshadweep has the highest voter-to-population ratio at 82.2, followed by Kerala at 77.1 and West Bengal at 75.1.
