In a major development amid ongoing nuclear talks with Iran, the United States has withdrawn troops and non-essential embassy staff from neighbouring Iraq, the Indian Express reported.

On the withdrawal, US President Donald Trump said, “They are being moved out because it could be a dangerous place, and we’ll see what happens. We’ve given notice to move out.”

Answering a question about lowering the risk in the Middle East, he said, “They [Iran] can’t have a nuclear weapon. Very simple, they can’t have a nuclear weapon".

According to a Times of India report, the State Department also authorised the optional exit of nonessential personnel and family members from diplomatic posts in Kuwait and Bahrain.

The US military is also following suit, with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth approving the voluntary withdrawal of military dependents from numerous places in the region.

US Central Command informed that it is “monitoring the developing tension.”

Speaking on a podcast on Wednesday (11 June), President Trump expressed growing doubts about the possibility of reaching a deal with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Earlier, Tehran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said that Iran is ready to compromise its nuclear programme in talks with the United States, but uranium enrichment is non-negotiable.

However, the United States is demanding that Iran immediately halt its uranium enrichment activities, which Washington fears could pave the way for the development of nuclear weapons.

In return, the US has offered to lift the economic sanctions currently imposed on Tehran.
