A medical student suffered head injuries in a clash between two groups allegedly over 'The Kerala Story' movie in Jammu on Sunday (14 May).
The clash between two groups occurred at the Boys' Hostel in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH ) in Jammu, leaving five medical students injured.
Among the Five injured students, four are said to be from Jammu and one from Kashmir.
The injured were identified as Haseeb of Bhaderwah, who suffered head injuries in the clash while four others - Arunesh, Akshit, Aniket and Omar Farooq - received minor injuries.
Students who were protesting alleged that the clash broke out after one of them wrote “It (Kerala Story) is a good movie” on a WhatsApp group meant for academic purposes for the first-year MBBS students.
The student who praised the movie, was confronted and assaulted in the hostel, leading to a larger altercation with some outsiders too joining the scuffle, reports The Hindustan Times.
The outsider, who had flared up the situation, was identified as Dr Rajvir, an alumnus of the GMC Jammu, presently posted at Kathua.
An FIR has been registered against him at Bakshi Nagar police station.
GMC Principal Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma stated that an internal probe will be conducted by the students' disciplinary committee, led by Dr A S Bhatia from the biochemistry department, within a week.
While the probe is ongoing, 10 students have been rusticated from the hostel for two months and are banned from attending classes.
The clash at the hostel has resulted in two reports from the warden and heightened security measures.
To ensure student safety, eight faculty members for both UG and PG hostels will be staying with them for the next three nights, sharing dinner and conversing to address any concerns.
