Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (13 January) inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), marking a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism in the region.

The tunnel has been renamed Sonamarg tunnel, after the famous tourist resort that will have round-the-year connectivity thanks to this project.

The event was attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Following the inauguration, PM Modi inspected the tunnel, reviewed its route map, and was briefed on the construction process.

The Prime Minister interacted with officials and workers involved in the project, commending their dedication in overcoming harsh conditions to achieve this engineering milestone.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had visited Sonamarg on 11 January to oversee preparations for the event, expressed optimism about the tunnel's impact on the region.

Posting on X, he stated, “Visited Sonmarg today to review preparations for PM @narendramodi ji's visit on Monday. The inauguration of the Z-morh tunnel will open Sonmarg to tourism all year round. Sonmarg will now be developed as a great ski resort. The local population will not have to leave in winter, and the travel time to Kargil/Leh from Srinagar will also reduce.”

The tunnel's soft opening took place in February last year, but its official inauguration was delayed due to Assembly elections.
