Jharkhand CM's Wife Rises In Politics After Assembly Election Victory: Kalpana Soren Likely To Become JMM Vice President

Jharkhand Chief Minister (CM) Hemant Soren's wife Kalpana Soren is expected to be named as the vice president of the ruling party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in the upcoming convention scheduled for April.

The member of the legislative assembly (MLA) from Gandey, Kalpana may be entrusted with the duty of fortifying the organisation after the party won 34 seats in the assembly elections held last year.

The gathering will celebrate the significant triumph of JMM. The decision is still pending on whether the convention will be held in Ranchi or Dumka.

A party functionary confirmed that representatives from Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu will be in attendance at the convention this time.

"JMM's last convention in 2021 was held in a simple manner due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this year, it will be held on a large scale to increase the party's influence in other states as well," the party functionary said.

Kalpana Soren, a prominent campaigner, spoke at over 100 rallies during the Jharkhand Assembly elections, contributing significantly to the victory of the INDI Alliance, a coalition of JMM and Congress in the state.

"She has already proved herself by aiding the party to mark a landslide victory during the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. Kalpana Soren deserves an important responsibility in the party," a party functionary said.

Significantly, Kalpana Soren was introduced as the leader of JMM at the closing event of 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' for the first time on March 17, 2024.

She coined the catchphrase, "Jharkhand Jhukega Nahin – India Rukega Nahi", which translates to "Jharkhand will not bow down – India will not stop".

Upon declaring her participation in active politics, Kalpana ran in the by-election for the Gandey seat. She subsequently managed to maintain her position during the Assembly elections.

It is reported that she has been making nearly all of the crucial decisions within the party. She was even speculated to become CM when Hemant Soren resigned but Champai Soren was appointed due to seniority.

Previously, assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto had appointed Kalpana Soren to the position of Chairperson for the Women and Child Development Committee.

Under the operational guidelines of the Jharkhand Assembly, numerous committees were established. The Speaker also restructured more than 25 of these assembly committees.
