The Central Government has sanctioned 316 road projects in Jammu and Kashmir under Batch-I of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-IV (PMGSY-IV).
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha shared the update on X and expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for prioritising rural development in Jammu and Kashmir.
With an estimated cost exceeding Rs 4,224 crore, the initiative aims to provide all-weather connectivity to 390 eligible habitations with populations over 250.
The implementation of PMGSY-IV from the financial year 2024–25 to 2028–29 was approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2024, according to News on AIR.
Notably, J&K is the first among all States and Union Territories to secure approval under this phase of the scheme, with a sanctioned road length of 1,781 km, the largest package to date for the region under PMGSY.
The approved road projects are expected to transform remote and far-flung areas by enhancing accessibility and stimulating socio-economic development.
As per the scheme guidelines, unconnected habitations will be linked with all-weather roads. Where feasible, roads will also connect to nearby schools, health centres, markets, and local growth hubs, offering broader benefits to residents.
PMGSY-IV targets the construction of 62,500 km of roads and the building and upgradation of bridges, aiming to connect 25,000 unconnected habitations across the country.
The scheme carries a total outlay of Rs 70,125 crore, with a central share of Rs 49,087.50 crore and a state contribution of Rs 21,037.50 crore.
