A criminal case was registered in Bengaluru on Tuesday (31 December) against Karnataka BJP MLC C T Ravi, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, and 11 other party members.

The charges include obstructing public way and causing a public nuisance during their poster campaign and protest against Karnataka's Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge.

The case was registered after the BJP leaders held a protest against Kharge in connection with the suicide of Bidar contractor Sachin Panchal.

The BJP leaders had gathered before Madhavnagar Junction and Race Course Road, demanding Kharge’s resignation over allegations that he played a role in the contractor’s death, Indian Express reported citing a police officer.

The police had detained Ravi, Ravikumar, Umesh Shetty, Shivakumar, Kiran Kumar Kasale, Harsha Hegde, Venkat, Karunakar, Nagesh, Prashanth, and Yadhuveer Rajendra Murthy.

Taking up a suo motu case, the police filed charges against the BJP leaders, alleging obstruction of public movement and pasting of handbills on walls.

An FIR was filed under the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act and sections 285 (offence of wearing or carrying a token used by public servants with the intent to deceive others), 292 (public nuisance), and 3 (5) (joint liability in cases where multiple people act with a common intention to commit a criminal act) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
