Police arrested Karur Central Town Secretary Masi Pavunraj and brought him to the Karur Town Police Station for questioning in connection with the stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally on 27 September, which killed 41 people, including 18 women and 10 children, reported The Times Of India.
Earlier, Karur West District Secretary Mathiazhagan was arrested near the Karur-Dindigul border by a special team.
Both were named as prime suspects along with TVK state general secretary Bussy Anand and deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar in the FIR registered under Sections 105, 110, 125(b), 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 3 of the TNPPDL Act.
On Tuesday (30 September), ADSP Premanand replaced DSP Selvaraj as the investigation officer. The incident occurred when a massive crowd at Vijay’s rally turned chaotic, triggering panic and injuries.
Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and L Murugan, along with TN BJP chief Nainar Nagendran, met victims’ families. “I can’t describe their sorrow. I am shattered ...I am unable to speak or console the bereaved,” Sitharaman was quoted as saying.
BJP chief JP Nadda formed an eight-member NDA delegation, led by MP Hema Malini, to visit Karur, reported Hindustan Times.
Members include Anurag Thakur, Tejasvi Surya, Braj Lal, Aprajita Sarangi, Rekha Sharma, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, and TDP’s Putta Mahesh Kumar. “We will assess the situation and meet the victims’ families,” Malini said.
TN Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced a one-member commission led by retired Judge Aruna Jagadeesan and urged parties to ensure safer public gatherings.
