The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has initiated a detailed feasibility study to explore the development of an urban water transport system in Alappuzha, modelled on the successful Kochi Water Metro, according to a New Indian Express report.

The proposed network aims to enhance connectivity across the backwater-rich district while catering primarily to its thriving tourism sector.

An expert team from KMRL recently visited Alappuzha to assess the viability of the project.

“An expert team visited Alappuzha to explore the feasibility of introducing a water transport system there. The primary focus will be the tourists who flock to the region, renowned for its enchanting lagoons and tranquil backwaters,” a senior KMRL official was quoted as saying.

The initial plan is expected to connect popular destinations such as Kumarakom, Muhamma, and Pathiramanal, an island in Vembanad Lake famous for its migratory bird population.

Unlike the Kochi network, which operates on shorter routes, the Alappuzha model will involve longer stretches of water travel, requiring more powerful, high-capacity electric vessels.

“These are lengthy routes compared to those in Kochi. But then we won’t be using the exact boats, but those with higher battery capacity. We will decide on the vessels based on route requirements. The water metro will offer a safe, efficient, and environmental-friendly travel option,” the official added.

KMRL’s water mobility expansion plan also extends beyond Alappuzha. The expert team is scheduled to visit Kollam “next week” to conduct a similar assessment, while a pre-feasibility study is already underway for introducing water metro services between Aluva and Nedumbassery Airport.

“We will submit the preliminary report within a month,” the official confirmed.
