A major accident was narrowly avoided late Sunday (8 September) night when the Prayagraj-Bhiwani Kalindi Express struck an LPG cylinder placed on the tracks in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Authorities have labeled the incident an "attempt to derail the train."

Police and fire personnel inspected the scene in Kanpur’s Shivrajpur area, where the cylinder was found on the tracks as the Kalindi Express was en route from Prayagraj to Bhiwani. The train was traveling at high speed when it hit the object, but the cylinder was dislodged upon impact, preventing a derailment.

According to a senior police official, "An attempt was made to derail the train by placing the LPG cylinder on the tracks. Upon receiving the alert, senior officers and a forensic team arrived to investigate, and the Railway Protection Force has also launched a probe."

The train's driver applied emergency brakes upon noticing the object, but the train made contact with the cylinder before coming to a stop. Fortunately, the impact caused the cylinder to roll away from the tracks.

An FIR has been filed, and two individuals have been detained for questioning. Six teams have been set up to investigate the case. Additionally, a molotov cocktail and a sweet box purchased from Chibramau in Kannauj were found at the scene, according to police.

This marks the second such incident in Uttar Pradesh in recent months. On August 17, 22 coaches of the Varanasi-Ahmedabad Sabarmati Express derailed near Kanpur after the train’s engine struck an object, believed to be a boulder, as described by the driver.
