Macron Backs India’s 2026 BRICS Presidency, Calls For ‘More Effective Multilateralism’ Amid Trump's Tariff Tantrums

French President Emmanuel Macron held a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (21 August), where they discussed efforts for more effective multilateralism.

The leaders agreed to coordinate closely in preparation for France's G7 presidency and India's BRICS presidency in 2026.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, the leaders exchanged views on the ongoing efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and the West Asia region. 

President Macron shared assessment on the recent meetings held between the leaders of the Europe, US and Ukraine in Washington.  He also shared his perspectives on the situation in Gaza, the statement said.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent support for peaceful resolution of the conflicts and early restoration of peace and stability, it added.

Further, both leaders also reaffirmed joint commitment to strengthen India-France Strategic Partnership and  mark 2026 as ‘Year of Innovation’ in a befitting manner. 

In a post on X, Macron said that India and France are working towards the success of the AI Impact Summit to be held in New Delhi in 2026.

Amid the tariff turmoil unleashed globally by US President Donald Trump, the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, civil nuclear energy, and innovation.

Trump had earlier imposed 25 per cent tariffs on India, which he later increased by additional 25 per cent, citing New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil.

"On trade issues, we agreed to strengthen our economic exchanges and our strategic partnership in all areas — this is the key to our sovereignty and independence," Macron said.

Further, the two leaders also discussed ways to strengthen multilateralism.

Macron said that India and France will work together for preparation of French presidency of the G7 and the Indian presidency of the BRICS in 2026.

"For more effective multilateralism, we agreed to work closely together in preparation for the French presidency of the G7 and the Indian presidency of the BRICS in 2026," Macron said.
