Major Infra Push For J&K: Centre Sanctions Projects Worth Over Rs 10,600 Crore

Jammu and Kashmir has secured approvals for road and tunnel infrastructure projects worth Rs 10,637 crore from the Union Government, covering 296 km across various categories, including bridges, tunnels, flyovers, and road safety works.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called it a "major achievement," stating, “My government has got Rs 10,600 crores worth of road & tunnel projects approved by the Union Government. I’m grateful to PM @narendramodi ji & Minister @MORTHIndia @nitin_gadkari ji for their continued support as we try to steer J&K on a path of progress, development & connectivity.”

The sanctioned projects include high-priority items such as the Pantha Chowk flyover in Srinagar (Rs 105 Cr), 4-lane Magam flyover (Rs 445 Cr), and major tunnel works like the 9-km Pir Ki Gali (Rs 3,830 Cr) and 7-km Sadhna tunnel (Rs 3,330 Cr) on NH 701.

Several bridges, ROBs, and bypass projects have also been cleared, all marked as high priority, except the Construction or Improvement of the RKCTC Trehgam-Chamkot road NH-701.

The funding spans across 19 projects, with the majority under the categories of bridges and road safety, particularly in Srinagar and the strategically important NH-701A and NH-444 corridors.

“Many strategically important projects will improve logistical support and troops mobility. Projects will improve Infrastructure in the Union Territory and connect various tourist destinations. Construction of tunnels will reduce the travel time, ensure all-weather connectivity and spur economic growth,” the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said, as quoted by Kashmir Horizon.

The Ministry has also approved the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and feasibility studies for several National Highway projects to be undertaken over the next three years.

These include the widening and upgradation of NH-444 from Srinagar to Qazigund, covering a distance of 63 km.

It also includes the construction of a 2-lane plus paved shoulder road from Shopian to Magam on NH-701A, spanning 75 km.

Another key project is the construction of the 10.80 km-long Panjtarni tunnel, along with 31 km of approach roads.

Additionally, the Domail–Katra–Bamla section of NH-144 will be developed to 4-lane specifications over a stretch of 82 km.
