Following skirmishes last week, police reported on Monday (30 December) that security forces had managed to demolish four bunkers belonging to armed men in the districts of Imphal East and Kangpokpi in Manipur. They also took control of three additional bunkers.

Over the past two days, large-scale operations led to the destruction of bunkers in various regions bordering Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi villages. These areas were previously the sites of gunfights following attacks launched by hill-based gunmen on the neighboring low-lying villages, according to a police statement.

"All armed miscreants involved in recent firing incidents at Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi have been flushed out. Four illegal bunkers have been destroyed while three other bunkers have been occupied by security forces both in the valley and dominating hill areas," the police said.

Additionally, a joint force consisting of the army, Border Security Force (BSF), and Central Reserved Police Force (CRPF) has taken control of the commanding regions in Uyok Ching, located in the Kangpokpi district.

Four individuals, comprising a police officer and a woman, sustained injuries from firearm assaults in the villages of Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi on Friday.

Gunmen positioned on nearby hills in the Kangpokpi district initiated attacks on the low-lying villages of Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi, triggering a gunfight with security forces and local volunteers.

Since May of the previous year, over 250 individuals have lost their lives, and thousands have been displaced due to ethnic conflicts between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur.
