The construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor in Maharashtra has gained momentum, with significant progress reported across multiple fronts, according to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).
NHSRCL is the implementing agency for the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.
Work on all three elevated stations—Thane, Virar, and Boisar—is advancing rapidly in Maharstra section of the high-speed rail corridor.
The first concrete slabs for both Virar and Boisar stations have already been cast, marking an important milestone in the civil construction phase.
Along the alignment, pier foundations are being laid at several sites, with approximately 44 km of piers completed so far.
Viaduct construction using full-span box girders has also commenced from Dahanu in Palghar district.
Meanwhile, excavation work is underway for seven mountain tunnels in Palghar district, while construction has begun on major bridges over the Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani rivers.
A major engineering highlight of the project is the 21 km underground and undersea tunnel being built between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata.
This tunnel includes a 7 km stretch under Thane Creek and is being constructed using two methods—Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for 16 km and the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) for the remaining 5 km.
A cumulative 4.1 km of tunnel excavation has been completed so far using NATM from Shilphata and two ADIT (Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel) faces.
Further, casting of Base Slab at both Vikhroli (at a depth of 56 meters) and Sawli shaft (at a depth of 39 meters) is complete, the NHSRCL said.
Sludge treatment plants are being installed at shaft sites, and the casting yard at Mahape is actively producing tunnel lining segments, the NHSRCL added.
At the underground Mumbai station in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), 80 per cent of excavation work is complete. Base slab casting—100 feet below ground—has begun at both ends of the station site.
The 508 Km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, also known as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, will pass through the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
The project has 12 stations planned at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bhaurach, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
