Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has announced that Terminal 1 (T1) of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will be demolished and redeveloped to enhance passenger handling capacity.
The phased redevelopment work will commence in November 2025, reported PTI.
MIAL, operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), in a statement said, "In November 2025, the transformation of Terminal 1 will proceed in carefully planned phases, ensuring minimal disruption. During the construction, Terminal 2 (T2) will shoulder the additional traffic."
The first phase of the project will involve the demolition of the existing terminal, followed by the construction of a new, modernised facility.
Once completed, the new T1 will be capable of handling 20 million passengers annually, marking a 42 per cent increase in capacity.
The redevelopment is expected to be completed between 2028 and 2029.
To manage the capacity gap created by the demolition, passenger traffic will be redirected to T2 and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is also being developed by the Adani Group and is set to commence operations this year.
Jeet Adani, Director at AAHL, emphasised the significance of this redevelopment, stating, "The team at CSMIA is working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with minimum disruption to daily operations or passenger experience. This redevelopment is not only about expanding capacity—it is about future-proofing our city's place on the global stage."
Mumbai Airport has witnessed a steady rise in passenger traffic, recording a 6.3 per cent increase in 2024, with 54.8 million travellers passing through its terminals.
The need for enhanced infrastructure has become more pressing, particularly as Mumbai-Delhi was ranked the world’s eighth busiest domestic air route in 2024.
