The Mumbai Police reported that they have discovered up to 19 fingerprints belonging to accused Bangladeshi national Mohammed Shariful Islam at the crime scene in actor Saif Ali Khan's residence.
Informants within the Mumbai Police informed The Indian Express that they were able to retrieve the suspect's fingerprints from various locations at the crime scene after the unsuccessful robbery attempt on 16 January.
These included the bathroom window that was used as an entry and exit point, the duct shaft, and the ladder used for accessing the building through the duct, among others.
The police are confident that these fingerprints are some of the most compelling evidence they possess against the 30-year-old suspect, Islam, in their pursuit of a conviction in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case.
The Mumbai Police ran these fingerprint samples through the state and national databases, but they didn’t match anyone as the accused is not an Indian national and illegally entered the country.
"We should have then realised that the robber could be from outside and probably a Bangladeshi national," a police officer said after Islam was transferred from a detention center to the Bandra Police Station.
It is probable that a team will escort him to Saif Ali Khan's residence, located on the 11th floor of the Satguru Sharan building on St Terrasa Road, Bandra West.
Islam, having already confessed to the police about his criminal actions, will be askedto recount the series of events, detailing his entrance into the building and his subsequent escape following an altercation with the actor.
Following his assault on Khan, Islam managed to flee to Dadar through the Bandra station and subsequently made his way to Worli. The authorities were able to track his movements using CCTV footage from Bandra Railway Station, Dadar, and Worli.
They spotted him at a food stall indulging in parathas. After identifying the stall owner, they obtained details of the UPI transaction Islam used to pay for his meal and a bottle of water. This information led the police to a labour camp near Ghodbunder, located in Thane.
