Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared that Mustafabad village in Lakhimpur Kheri district will be renamed Kabir Dham, after learning that no Muslim families currently reside there, reported The Times Of India.
He said the decision seeks to revive the village’s traditional identity, contrasting it with what he described as politically or religiously driven name changes in the past.
During his visit to the Vishwa Kalyan Ashram in Mustafabad for the Smriti Prakatotsav Mela on Monday (27 October), Adityanath addressed the gathering and said, “Upon arrival, I asked about the village and came to know that it is named Mustafabad. I asked about the Muslim population here, and was told that no Muslim family lives here. I assured the residents that we will rename the village Kabir Dham.”
The chief minister directed officials to promptly submit a proposal for the name change. He added that, in his view, the earlier renaming of Ayodhya and Prayagraj to Faizabad and Allahabad had been done to hurt people’s religious sentiments. Calling such actions “not secularism but hypocrisy,” he said that after the BJP government came to power, Ayodhya and Prayagraj regained their old, glorious heritage. He asserted that, in the same way, Mustafabad would now be known as Kabir Dham.
Located in Gola Gokaran Nath tehsil, Mustafabad had 77 households and 495 residents, including 264 males and 231 females, as per the 2011 Census. About 24.2 per cent of its population belongs to Scheduled Castes, with no Scheduled Tribe members recorded. The residents primarily comprise Brahmin, Yadav, and Verma communities, and local estimates suggest the population could reach around 600 by 2026.
