  • The smart coach aims to provide world-class facilities to passengers with the help of intelligent sensor-based systems.
  • A new era of train travel experience with enhanced comfort is being rolled out by Indian Railways with the introduction of newly-upgraded Tejas sleeper coaches in Rajdhani trains.

    These bright golden hued coaches with enhanced smart features are being introduced to run Rajendra Nagar (Patna)-New Delhi Rajdhani Express train and will offer best in class travel experience.

    Patna-bound special express is the second Rajdhani train to have newly-upgraded Tejas sleeper coach rakes. The new rake made its maiden run yesterday (1 September).

    The smart coach aims to provide world-class facilities to passengers with the help of intelligent sensor-based systems.

    The smart sleeper coach rakes are equipped with passenger information and coach computing unit (PICCU) to record the data of wheel slide protection (WSP), CCTV footage, toilet odour sensors, panic switch and other items integrated with fire detection and alarm system.

    PICCU will record the data of the panic switch and other items integrated with fire detection and alarm system, air quality and choke filter sensor and energy meter.

    Some of the additional smart features include two LCDs inside each coach displaying vital journey related information to the passengers such as the next station, distance remaining, expected time of arrival, delay and safety related messages.

    Security and surveillance monitoring involve six cameras being fitted in each coach which gives live recording. CCTV cameras with day night vision capability, facial recognition even in low light condition, network video recorder are provided.

    Besides, all main entrance doors are centralised and controlled by the guard and trains will not start until all doors are closed.

    Fire alarm, detection and suppression systems involving all coaches are being provided with automatic fire alarm and detection system. The pantry and power cars have automatic fire suppression systems in case a blaze is detected.

    There is also an ‘emergency talk back’ for medical or security emergency systems in the improved coaches.

    Toilets are being provided with anti-graffiti coating, gel coated shelf, new design dustbin, door latch activated light, engagement display and infant care seat.

    There would be automatic displays of toilet occupancy inside each coach while there are panic buttons in each lavatory, in case of any emergency.

    There is a provision of two toilet annunciation sensor integration systems. Toilet annunciation sensor integration is fitted in each coach, which will relay dos and don’ts announcements in the lavatories, whenever it is engaged.

    The bio-vacuum toilet system in the upgraded coach provides improved hygienic conditions in the toilet due to improved flushing, which also saves water per flush.

    Coaches have been provided with air spring suspension in bogies to improve passenger comfort and ride quality. There will be on-board condition monitoring system for bearing, wheel, to improve safety.

    Coaches will be provided with air quality measurement for air conditioning system and water level sensor to indicate water availability on a real time basis.

    Improved interiors consist of seats and berths having fire-resistant silicone foam, providing better comfort and safety to passengers.

    Instead of curtains, roller blinds have been provided for easy sanitisation with mobile charging points and berth reading light for each passenger. Upper berth climbing facility has been improved.
