Nitin Gadkari Proposes Plans For Monthly, Yearly Toll Passes To Ease Costs For Private Vehicle Owners

The Indian government is considering the introduction of monthly and yearly toll passes for private vehicles, as announced by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, during an event on Wednesday (15 January). This move aims to ease financial and logistical burdens on private vehicle owners while modernising the country's toll systems.

Currently, private vehicles contribute only 26 per cent of total toll revenue, with the remaining 74 per cent generated by commercial vehicles. "We are considering monthly or annual passes for private vehicles, as this would not significantly impact the overall revenue," Gadkari explained, emphasising the feasibility of this measure.

To further enhance convenience, the Ministry is planning to relocate toll booths outside village boundaries, reducing highway traffic disruptions for local residents. This measure reflects the government's focus on reducing congestion and improving the driving experience for all commuters.

In a major step toward modernisation, the government is piloting a barrier-free toll collection system based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology.

The GNSS-based system will work in tandem with the existing FASTag system to streamline toll payments and eliminate the need for physical toll booths.

The GNSS technology leverages satellites to track vehicles equipped with On-Board Units (OBUs), which communicate data to a central system. Tolls are calculated based on the distance travelled, providing a seamless and transparent tolling experience. This innovation aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion at toll plazas while enhancing operational efficiency.

If implemented, these initiatives could bring considerable relief to private vehicle owners, aligning with the government's broader vision of creating a smarter and more efficient transportation infrastructure.
