Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday (20 April) flagged-off 1,111 GPS-equipped water tankers for the Delhi Jal Board, announcing that citizens can now track their locations through a dedicated tanker app.
Targeting the former AAP government, Gupta said there was a "leakage" in the entire system in the name of the tanker mafia.
She stated that the whereabouts of the water tanks were unknown earlier.
The Delhi CM added that the routes undertaken by the tankers could be monitored now since they have GPS installed.
"In the previous government, there was a leakage in the entire system in the name of tanker mafias. There was corruption. Water was sent to the common people, but no one knew where it went. The new government of Delhi is dedicated to providing clean water. Today, 1,111 tankers are being sent, they are GPS-enabled so that they can be tracked. The routes of every tanker can be recorded. People will be able to monitor the location with the help of the tanker app," Gupta was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"Every drop counts when it comes to the welfare of Delhi! With the introduction of GPS-enabled water tankers, there will be no room left for the tanker mafia. Our control rooms will ensure real-time tracking, making sure water reaches those who need it the most. Clean and safe Jal for every Ghar!," Gupta posted on X.
"This is a step towards complete transparency. This is not the final solution, we will work on a new town plan to provide water from the tap to every resident," Gupta said during the ceremony marking 60 days of her government in Burari, Deccan Herald reported.
In its budget for the 2025-26 fiscal, the Delhi government has allocated Rs 9,000 crore for the water sector. This amount includes allocation for installing smart meters, reviving water bodies, laying pipelines and desilting drains, among others, Gupta said.
