Union Minister of State for IT and Electronics, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, announced on Tuesday (16 January) that the government is set to notify stricter IT rules within the next seven days to address compliance issues related to the advisory on deepfakes.

Chandrasekhar revealed that the government had earlier conveyed to social media and online platforms that a failure to fully adhere to the advisory would prompt the introduction of new IT rules.

Speaking at an event, Chandrasekhar acknowledged that the response to the advisory on deepfakes had been "mixed" among platforms.

As reported by Economic Times, He emphasised that the government's stance had been clear from the outset, stating, "There has been a mixed performance of compliance, and I had said at the time of the advisory, that if we find that the advisory is not being followed through completely, we will follow it up with very clear amended IT rules that will be notified."

The upcoming amended IT rules are expected to incorporate the elements outlined in the advisory, reinforcing measures to address the challenges posed by deepfakes.

Chandrasekhar, during his visit to the boAt manufacturing unit in Noida on National Startup Day, indicated that the amendments would be firmly embedded in the IT rules to ensure more robust implementation.

The move comes as the government aims to enhance cybersecurity measures and combat the spread of misinformation and manipulated content, particularly in the context of deepfakes, which have the potential to deceive and mislead the public.
