Odisha government has reportedly mooted a proposal to set up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Semiconductors at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Bhubaneswar, marking a significant step to boost emerging technologies.
The Electronics and Information Technology (E&IT) department will support this initiative, which aims to strengthen Odisha's capabilities in semiconductor research, development, manufacturing, and advanced skill-building, reported The New Indian Express.
The decision came after Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed the E&IT department to collaborate with IIIT, Bhubaneswar, for the CoE.
The move reportedly came as industries showed increased interest in investing in the state's semiconductor sector, especially with the recent push for the electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
While the semiconductor sector offers immense potential for industrial growth, innovation, and high-value jobs, a significant challenge remains: the unavailability of skilled and industry-ready professionals.
“There is an urgent need for a robust talent pipeline and a strong support ecosystem to ensure Odisha’s competitiveness in this critical sector. The institute’s existing infrastructure, faculty strength, and technological focus make it a suitable choice to anchor such an ambitious initiative," a senior official was quoted as saying by TNIE.
Apart from providing advanced training and capacity-building opportunities, the proposed centre will also facilitate cutting-edge research and development in semiconductor technologies.
The state government will provide the necessary financial and administrative support.
The E&IT department has asked IIIT, Bhubaneswar, to submit a detailed proposal by 30 June, outlining an academic framework that focuses on advanced training, research, and innovation in semiconductor technologies.
Additionally, the institute has been advised to introduce post-graduate diploma and certificate courses in advanced semiconductor engineering starting from the 2026-27 academic year.
