Prime Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a new initiative aimed at providing protective cover to critical sites across India, from religious and industrial hubs to public infrastructure like railway stations, within the next decade.

Speaking from the Red Fort on Independence Day, Modi said the mission would be entirely indigenous in research, development, and manufacturing, and designed to adapt to the evolving nature of warfare. The system will enable precision targeting and swift action to neutralise threats, he added.

The government aims to complete the nationwide deployment of the system by 2035.

The Indian Air Force already refers to its S-400 Triumf air defence missile system as “Sudarshan Chakra,”a nod to the divine weapon of Lord Krishna, symbolising precision, speed, and lethal reach.

The choice to name the new nationwide defence shield the same could be a deliberate reference to the S-400’s proven success during Operation Sindoor, when it reportedly downed multiple Pakistan Air Force aircraft, including one at an extraordinary range of 300 km.
