Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak in the Rajya Sabha on 29 July during a special debate on Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, NDTV reported, citing sources, on Wednesday (23 July).

The debate, scheduled for next Tuesday (29 July), comes amid the opposition's demand for discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.

The terror attack by Pakistan-backed terrorists on 22 April resulted in the deaths of 26 innocent people, mostly tourists, in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.

In response, India on 7 May launched air strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Opposition leaders had demanded a detailed discussion in Parliament and urged the Prime Minister to speak on the armed forces' action.

Initially seeking a debate this week, the opposition eventually agreed to a 16-hour discussion scheduled for next week, after it became clear PM Modi would be travelling to London in the coming days to sign a major free trade agreement with the United Kingdom.

Operation Sindoor was a tri-service military offensive launched on 7 May, targeting nine terror camps and bases across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

The operation triggered a sharp escalation, with Pakistan firing missiles and deploying armed drones against Indian military and civilian locations.

India retaliated strongly, leading to a temporary military standoff.

Hostilities ended following a ceasefire understanding between New Delhi and Islamabad.

The upcoming parliamentary debate will cover the terror attack, India’s response, the cross-border escalation, and the ceasefire itself.

The discussion is also expected to address claims by US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly asserted that he brokered the ceasefire.

The Indian government has denied this, stating that the agreement was negotiated directly with Pakistan.

Opposition parties have criticised PM Modi’s silence on Trump’s remarks.
