One person was shot dead and two were severely injured following clashes between BJP and RJD workers in Bihar's Saran district on Tuesday (21 May).

Two people have been arrested in connection with the violence, and the internet has been suspended for two days.

The confrontation began when RJD's Saran candidate Rohini Acharya, daughter of former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, arrived at a polling booth in Chapra city on Monday (20 May) evening.

The locals accused her of booth raiding. Locals also alleged that Rohini Acharya and her supporters misbehaved with some voters after reaching the booth, India Today reported.

As a ruckus ensued, she hastily left the spot.

The situation escalated on Tuesday, leading to an exchange of gunfire between workers of the two parties.

One person succumbed to gunshot wounds, and two others were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

In response to the incident, a large number of police personnel were deployed near Bhikhari Thakur Chowk in Chapra.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) and the District Magistrate are on the spot to manage the situation.

"Action has been taken against those who instigated this incident. The internet has been banned for two days," Saran SP Gaurav Mangla was quoted as saying by India Today.

Saran was one of the five Lok Sabha seats in Bihar that went to polls on Monday, recording a voter turnout of 50.46 per cent.

Rohini Acharya is contesting against two-term sitting BJP MP and former Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy in Saran.
