Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (25 July) achieved a significant milestone by completing 4,078 consecutive days in office, surpassing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's record of 4,077 days, news agency IANS reported.

Gandhi had served as PM from 24 January 1966, to 24 March 1977, in an uninterrupted tenure.

With this achievement, PM Modi has become the second longest-serving Prime Minister in India’s history, trailing only Jawaharlal Nehru, who holds the record for the longest unbroken tenure.

Beyond the record, this milestone further solidifies PM Modi’s place in India’s political history.

He is the first and only Prime Minister born after the country’s independence, a distinction that adds to his already impressive portfolio of accomplishments.

PM Modi also holds the record as the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister and the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Hindi-speaking state.

Another extraordinary achievement is that PM Modi is the only non-Congress leader in India to have completed two full terms in office, having been re-elected twice with a majority.

His victories in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 Lok Sabha elections have not only showcased his political dominance but have made him the only non-Congress Prime Minister to secure a majority on his own in the Lok Sabha.

Notably, he is also the first sitting Prime Minister to return to power with a full majority since Indira Gandhi in 1971.

PM Modi has further etched his name in India’s political annals as the only Prime Minister (apart from Nehru) to lead his party to victory in three consecutive general elections.

This includes his triumphant campaigns in Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012) and in the Lok Sabha elections (2014, 2019, and 2024), giving him a unique place in the history of Indian politics.

His six consecutive wins as the leader of a party — including both state and national elections — set him apart as the only Indian leader to achieve such a feat.

This latest milestone adds to PM Modi's almost 24 years of leadership in both state and national politics.

From his early days as a modest tea-seller in Vadnagar, Gujarat, to his rise through the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), PM Modi's journey has been one of exceptional persistence and ambition.

Before becoming the Prime Minister of India, PM Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for over a decade, gaining recognition for his governance style and economic policies.

His leadership in the 2014 national elections propelled the BJP to a historic victory, and since then, he has reshaped India’s domestic and international profile.

Under his leadership, India has emerged as a confident global power, with PM Modi positioning the country as an assertive and dynamic voice on the world stage.
